In leagues like AFL, MLS, MLB, and CFL the season starts and a champion is determined within the calendar year.
In the NFL, NHL, and NBA that isn't the case.
So, do the Colts and the eventual champs in the NHL and NBA get credited as champions of 2006 or 2007 without resorting to the "2006-07" nomenclature?
Personally, I think the year that the season starts is the year that the championship should be designated to. What would you decide? Thanks.

That is generally the way it is recorded. Even though the College football championshp is determined in Jan. it is for the previous year in which the season started. In the NFL it's just the Super Bowl whatever number. Although the Colts were the AFC champs for 2006 prior to winning the Super Bowl. The Bears were the NFC 2006 champs.

Ideally, in whichever year the majority of the season takes place.
So, in NCAA Football and NFL, the champs of the past season were 2006.
In NHL and NBA, the majority of the season (including playoffs) takes place after the new year, so 2007 would be better
